What's the Difference Between a Travel Agent and a Travel Specialist?

If you are planning to book a flight, hotel, car rental, all-inclusive vacation, or a mainstream ocean cruise, there's no question that a well seasoned travel agent can easily assist you in your vacation planning. However, there are times when a unique and specialized event is beyond the scope of a travel agent, and these are moments when you should be seeking out a travel specialist that has more experience, knowledge, and skills to fulfill your specific needs.
This may get confusing at times, because many of you assume that a travel agent is someone who is experienced and knowledgeable in all areas of the travel market, but unfortunately that is not true! Like a doctor or lawyer that decides to specialize in a specific medical or legal field, they take it to the next level and spend the extra time to educate and train themselves to be a specialist. The same holds true with travel agents that become specialists in selected areas of the travel market.
This is Why I Became a Destination Wedding Specialist
By definition I still call myself a travel agent, however, over the span of my travel career I realized there was a growing demand for a more professional and specialized approach for couples who were looking to have a destination wedding. I understood that I could not treat my wedding clients the same as I would treat the average client looking to just take a vacation, as wedding couples go through a detailed planning process that requires more dedicated time and resources.
More one-on-one time, guidance, and in-depth recommendations are very important when dealing with future wedding couples. Plus, they need knowledgeable assistance with the legalities required for their chosen destinations and venues. All these crucial details allowed me to understand that just being a travel agent was truly not enough, and that I had to become more specialized for my clients in this niche market.
I Treat This as a Once in a Lifetime Event
The unfortunate reality is that many travel agents and agencies out there today still treat destination weddings the same as planning a basic vacation. They still don't understand that when a couple walks through their agency doors they're not just looking to plan a vacation, they have a vision that their destination and venue will offer them a wedding ceremony of their dreams!
Understanding the clients needs is where a specialist will offer the necessary time and resources to guide them through the entire planning process. Specialists know that it can be extremely confusing, however, the moment the clients deal with us through this process, they soon realize that their experience will be relaxing and stress-free. In the end, our clients just want to know that they picked the best destination and venue choice for their once-in-a-lifetime event.
